WeSTOC - June 20-29, 2008

WeSTOC

TX -> NM -> CO -> NM
NM -> CO -> NM -> TX

Day 1 - Friday 6/20
Dallas to Tucumcari, NM
457 miles

I left work at 2pm. I was headed for a state park in New Mexico
but as I crossed the border of TX/NM I ware running into
some storms.

It appeared the storms were right on top of where I was
planning to camp so I kept heading west and saw a
KOA sign in Tucumcari, NM. Time to stop, eat and
setup camp.

Day 2 - Saturday 6/21
Tucumcari, NM to Elk Creek Campground, Colorado
552 miles

I got up and bought a new cell phone charger in Albuquerque, NM.

I then headed for US 550. Stayed on it from NM into Colorado. The
Colorado part is called the Million Dollar Highway. I can't believe I
didn't take any pics of this section.

I ended up at Elk Creek Campground in the Blue Mesa area.

Day 3 - Sunday 6/22
Elk Creek Campground
to
Sipapu Ski Lodge Campground, New Mexico

444 miles

I took my time getting up but still hit the road early, about 7AM.

From the Elk Creek Campground on US 50 I headed west a little
and took Hwy 92. This road doesn't look like much at first.. you
think you're going to a marina, then you go over a dam and there
is a huge ravine you ride along. It's an incredible road!

From Hwy 92 I made my way to Hwy 133 which is another great
sceinic road.

From Hwy 133 it was time to hit Hwy 82 and head over to Aspen
and Independence Pass.

I turned south to head back into New Mexico and Toas where
WeSTOC was being held. When I got to Taos I checked out the
designated campgrounds but they were a little to crowded for my
taste so I hit the Sipapu Ski Lodge Campground. I've been there
5 years before and it was a nice place.

It was time to make some dinner and a fire and chill out under
the stars...

Day 4 - Monday 6/23
Ride around Taos
200+ miles

I rode with Dan (dmulk) on a couple 80-100 mile loops
around the area.

Day 5-7 - Tuesday 6/24 thru Thursday 6/26
Just hang out and meet people
130+ miles

I decided to spend the next three days just hanging out around
the hotel and meeting people from the site.

It seemed like almost every day at 3pm-ish it would start raining.

I did do a ride with Don (dond) and he tried to take me dual sport
riding.

Day 8 - Friday 6/27
Sipapu Ski Lodge Campground, New Mexico
to
Trinidad Lake State Park, Colorado

461 miles

I headed out of Sipapu and wanted to head into Colorado again,
can't get enough of Colorado. Headed out on US 84 and just
caught this Hot Air Balloon landing.

US 84 is a really nice road with lots of high speed sweepers.

From there it was Hwy 17 (WOW!) to US 285 north. Then
it was US 50 which is great in this area.

I rode Hwy 165 through the San Isabel Forest.
Another great Colorado road!!!

I ended up at Lake Trinidad State Park.

Day 9 - Saturday 6/28
Trinidad Lake State Park, Colorado
to
Arrowhead Lake State Park, Texas

595 miles

I rode Hwy 12 - Highway of Legends Scenic Byway on
my way out of the park. This is another incredible
Colorado road.. geesh.. they never end.

I ended up at Arrowhead Lake State Park near Witchita Falls, TX
just as some storms were coming through.. didn't stop me from
making a fire.

Day 10 - Sunday 6/29
Arrowhead Lake State Park, Texas to home
130 miles

The ride home was pretty short. I wanted to camp at a state
park I hadn't been to before so that's why I didn't come home the
night before.

Here are all of my pics.
